Calling It: This Is Replacing the Smoky Eye for Autumn

Benefit Cosmetics

"How to Wear Pink Eye Shadow" is not an article I thought I would be writing off the back of the autumn/winter 2017 catwalk shows, especially not this early into the schedule. But pink eye shadow has been everywhere, from DelpozoВ and Oscar de la RentaВ in New York to Mark Fast and Bora Aksu in London (to name just a few). It's fast gaining traction as the eye shadow shade of the season.

It's fresh, it's fun, but it's had a notoriously bad rap, shelved alongside red eye shadow and labelled as "makes eyes look swollen." But the makeup artists and designers championing this eye shadow shade are making a good case for the colour. It actually brightens the face, looks seriously pretty and can be really flattering. The secret (as with all makeup colour choices) is to find the shade that works with your skin tone. Nail that and you can wear pink eye shadow with confidence.В

At Mark Fast in London, Lisa Potter-Dixon, head makeup artist for Benefit Cosmetics, used two blushers to create the striking pink eye look. She applied the purple hue from the Hervana Blush($30) beforeВ using a damp brush and drawing on a link of pink using the GALifornia blushВ ($30). Potter-Dixon then applied a slick of blue mascaraВ to lashes.

In real life, by all means stick to your trusty black mascara, but keep scrolling to see how good the pink eye shadow looks with blue mascara, plus how to find the shade that suits you.В

How to find your perfect pink

Pinks work for everyone," Potter-Dixon tells Byrdie UK. "That's the beautiful thing about them! Although picking the right shade for your skin tone is essential."

Here are the basic rules she outlined:

Light skin:В Pastel pinks with an apricot undertone.В

Medium and olive skin:В Fuchsia and raspberry pinks.

Dark and black skin:В Berry pinks and red-based pinks.

But while those are good guidelines to follow, Potter-Dixon tells us, "always experiment, as it's just makeup, so you can always take it off! Neon pinks, for example, work for all skin tones and look amazing as eyeliner."

It's also worth noting that the texture of eye shadow you choose will give you a different effect. "Powders will give you a softer, buildable finish, meaning you can create as subtle or as strong a look as you like.

"I love using a pink, satin finish, lipstick on the eye. The light gloss and imperfect finish of using a lippie on can look effortlessly gorgeous. Just make sure you use a primer on the eye first, as lipstick is prone to staining."
