3 Things Skin Pros Do Every Single Day (And 3 Things They Avoid)

Since working within the beauty sphere I've heard almost every skincare idea/theory/tip under the sun. I've trialled countless skincare products and doneВ a lot of research in a bid to uncover all of the best products that genuinely deliver on results. But hands down, one of the greatest sources of skincare info comes straight from the mouths of the industry's most knowledgeable experts.

That's why today, three of Australia's most trusted skin therapists have confided their three best skincare tips, paired with three things that should always be avoided when it comes to a healthy complexion. The expert line-up consists of facialistВ Jocelyn Petroni (who we frequently refer to as having magic hands at Byrdie Australia), crazy-smart dermal therapist James Vivian, and facialistВ Richie Angelo ofВ Made by Self salon in Melbourne (known for its mind-blowing therapies and pink exteriors alike).В В

  • Apply sunscreen every single day, rain, hail, or shine. Even on a cloudy day the sun's rays are ageing your skin (so does your computer screen).В
  • Seek a professional skin consultation from an industry expert, because you can't always believe marketing or product packaging.
  • Try before you buy, read reviews, and always do your research. The beauty market is saturated with product, and education is key to success.

  • Sleep with your makeup on. It makes skin congested and dehydrated. A quick swipe of micellar water leaves skin clean and nourished for the most restorative and regenerative part of your skin's day (beauty sleep).
  • Use a product your friend recommended.В Each person's skin will respond completely differently to a specific ingredient, even when they have the same skin type and concerns as someone else.
  • Skip the serum. Serums contain concentrated amounts of active ingredients. This means a serum is the product that will visibly improve your skin more than any other product.

  • Always double cleanse at night. The first cleanse removes makeup, SPF, and grime, while the second cleanse properly cleans the skin. This can help with product build-up and congestion. And, it helps serums and moisturisers really penetrate.В
  • AlwaysВ take your skincare regime to your neck (including the back of neck) and dГ©colletage. These areas tend be neglected and always shows the first signs of ageing.В It's the biggest regret of most of my mature clients.
  • Think about the health of your gut (your microbiome). From my experience, a lot of skin issues can be traced back to the gut. Introducing good bacteria from probiotic supplements or food sources (such as apple cider vinegar, sauerkraut, kimchi, yoghurt, and kombucha) can do wonders for your skin and health.

  • Use the same products year round. In the warmer months, it's best to switch oil-based serums and heavy creams for lighter options (like hyaluronic and water-based formulas). Anything heavy we put on our skin during sweaty days will only sit on top and cause congestion.
  • Use too many active ingredientsВ in your daily regime. I treat a lot of sensitised skin types that are affected by too many actives. Don't overdo it. If you're using an enzyme-based cleanser, vitamin C in the morning, and retinol at night, this is like a mini-peel every day. Switch it up to every second day.В
  • Use any old facial sunscreen. Make sure it is zinc-based, so it completely blocks all UV (UVA and UVB) rays.

  • Place your skin in the hands of a trusted, qualified and experienced skincare therapist and see them every 12 weeks. If you can afford it, see them more often.В В
  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Silk helps reduce sleep-induced wrinkles, as well as inhibiting the absorbing of your skincare onto your pillowcase.
  • Combine at-home skincare with clinic procedures. At-home skincare will only take your skin so far, whilst in-clinic treatments can truly take the skin to the next level, especially when it comes to treating conditions such as ageing, congestion, pigmentation, and redness.
